Healthy Choices: Substance Use and Digital Safety Modules for Grade 6

Knowing the facts and developing strategies to help make healthy and safe decisions about substance use and digital media can help support student well-being.

Access the Healthy Choices Modules through the Ministry of Education’s VLE.

The Ministry of Education has implemented two new learning modules to support existing expectations in the Grade 6 Health and Physical Education and Language curricula.

These modules provide a consistent, ready-to-implement approach to substance use health and digital media safety.

School Mental Health Ontario is supporting the development and implementation of the new learning modules for Grade 6.

These modules help equip students with evidence-informed knowledge, skills, and strategies to make healthy choices regarding substance use and digital media safety.

There are important reasons to bring these modules into the classroom:

  • Grade 6 students face increasing opportunities to engage with digital media and substances.
  • This proactive learning offers reliable information to help increase student safety.
  • Making informed choices that align with our identities, values, and goals also supports student mental health and well-being, which in turn support learning and achievement.

The following resources have been developed to provide supports and helpful information to enhance the delivery of the Ministry of Education’s Healthy Choices: Substance Use and Digital Safety Modules for Grade 6.

Note: the PD Placemat (Trifold) is designed to be edited digitally, then printed (11×17”) and shared with educators during an in-person training session. The Self-Directed Learning Guide is designed to be shared digitally with educators for self-directed learning. Feel free to customize both for the needs of your school board (e.g., add your branding, revise or add content, connect to other current learning).
