Celebrating Learning and Well-Being: Education Week and Mental Health Week

Each year, the first week of May marks two important recognitions in Ontario—Education Week and Mental Health Week. While each has its own focus, together they highlight something fundamental: the important connection that students thrive when learning environments support both academic success and mental well-being.

At School Mental Health Ontario, we know that mental health and education are deeply connected. Learning happens best when students feel safe, supported, and valued. This week offers an opportunity to celebrate the incredible work happening in schools, while reinforcing the importance of promoting student mental health every day.

A shared commitment to student success

The theme of Education Week is ‘Igniting Minds, Inspiring Futures’, celebrating learning, growth  and achievement. It recognizes the dedication of educators, students, and families to build inclusive learning communities that help students to succeed.

In Catholic school communities, the Catholic Education Week theme is ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ calling on school communities to walk together with compassion and purpose, guided by hope and a commitment to dignity, equity, and the well-being of every student.

Mental Health Week, led nationally by the Canadian Mental Health Association, focuses on the importance of mental wellness and reducing stigma. This year’s theme, ‘Unmasking Mental Health’ encourages people to look beyond the surface, connect with each other, listen with empathy, and understand that mental health is health.

Together, these observances align closely with the vision of School Mental Health Ontario:

To provide identity-affirming, evidence-informed mental health information, supports and services to support the mental health and well-being of every student.

Our shared role

Caring adult relationships, inclusive environments, and consistent mental health promotion practices all make a difference in a student’s ability to learn and thrive. As we mark Education Week and Mental Health Week together, we’re reminded that everyone in the school community has a role to play in supporting student well-being.

Whether you’re an educator integrating everyday mental health practices, a parent or caregiver exploring our By Your Side hub, or a student leader creating safe and supportive school spaces—your efforts matter.
