When educators are concerned about a student, they can use the ONE-CALL approach to validate how a student is feeling and, if needed, link them to support. Students feel understood and know that they matter when their emotions are validated.
Why is the ONE-CALL approach important?
Early identification of concerns can prevent future mental health problems. While it’s not the educator’s job to diagnose or provide treatment, you’re a critical and supportive link between students who are struggling and the resources they need to flourish.
How can the ONE-CALL approach be used?
When educators notice a change in a student’s behaviour, they can follow the ONE-CALL steps to Observe, Notice, Explore, Connect, Ask, Listen, and Link to support the student as needed. The resource provides helpful conversation starters for engaging in discussions with students, along with suggestions for how to notice in remote/in-person settings when a student might be struggling.
