Our team

School Mental Health Ontario’s Student, Parent and Caregiver Engagement team focuses on centering the voices of students, parents and caregivers in conversation about mental health and well-being within the school environment.

 

About the Student and Parent/Caregiver Engagement Team 

We work with adults and students to ensure that the ideas and perspectives of students, parents and caregivers are included in school mental health. This includes:  

  • Working with students, parents and caregivers to hear their opinions and perspectives.   
  • Amplifying student, parent and caregiver voice.   
  • Working with school staff to coach and support student, parent and caregiver engagement initiatives.  
  • Developing tools to support inclusive and effective mental health awareness, learning, and wellness promotion activities for students.

Our team

Student and Parent/Caregiver Engagement Consultant – Team Lead

Bachelor’s degree in psychology and health studies, and a master’s degree in public health

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about health promotion and sharing knowledge. There’s a lot to learn when you listen and hear about people’s experiences, it makes working in education and mental health much more meaningful and authentic. 

What do you do to care for your mental health?

To take care of myself, I like to find a recipe to cook with good music blasting.

What languages do you speak?

English and a little Edo/Bini

Student Engagement Consultant

Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, and a Master’s degree in Health Geography 

What are you passionate about?

I strongly believe that good mental health sets a positive foundation for many life experiences, including education. There is no one who better knows what students want and need to support their mental health than other students. 

What do you do to care for your mental health?

I like to work out to recharge my energy and clear my mind.

What languages do you speak?

English and some Portuguese 

Parent/Caregiver Engagement and Literacy Consultant

Master’s degree in social work

What are you passionate about?

My objective is to help students/parents/caregivers achieve positive mental health and overall well-being through education, system navigation, and advocacy by removing barriers that hinder their journey in life.

What do you do to care for your mental health?

I take long walks, read, connect with family and friends, and when weather permits, garden!

Student Mental Health Literacy Consultant & Implementation Support Coach

Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Registered as a Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario  

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about making learning about mental health and well-being a regular part of school, just like learning about physical health. There is no better place to reach children and youth than in schools, and no better time to learn information and skills that can benefit them the rest of their lives.   

What do you do to care for your mental health?

Walking—especially outside early in the morning when it’s quiet

Student Engagement Consultant (Equity focus)

Master’s degrees in education and social work; Registered Social Worker

What are you passionate about?

I’m passionate about resource mobilization and ensuring that the voices of marginalized populations are amplified and centered in conversations about mental health promotion and literacy. 

What do you do to care for your mental health?

Self-care for me means making a deliberate effort to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with my inner self. In order to do that I typically journal or meditate. Those practices help me re-center and recharge.

I believe in mental health services being adapted to the needs of the ones they serve and I’m passionate about empowering students, parents and caregivers with knowledge to advocate for their mental health needs.

Implementation Support Coach

What are you passionate about?

The importance of human connection, positive relationships and the influence we can have with others in being that kind, considerate and caring person in someone else’s life. I believe in working with others to find positive and peaceful solutions and transforming challenges into opportunities.

What do you do to care for your mental health?

I enjoy hiking, skiing, listening to music and taking the time to enjoy the moments.
