Various studies have found that engaging in the activity of colouring has facilitated a decrease in anxiety levels in the individual (Ashlock, Miller-Perrin & Krumrei-Mancuso, 2018; Burton & Baxter, 2019; Curry & Kasser, 2005; Powell, Alcorn & Lindsay, 2017). Most studies reported the benefits to be greatest when the colouring page employed a structured image (complex geometric shapes, intricate plaid, mandalas, adult colouring pages, etc.) as opposed to free form colouring using a blank page. Multiple studies found that students reported a decrease in anxiety surrounding assessment (testing/exams) when engaging in a colouring task (Burton & Baxter, 2019; Curry & Kasser, 2005; Powell, et al., 2017).
