Identity-Affirming Approaches to School Mental Health

This session introduces SMH-ON's Identity-Affirming School Mental Health Frame and gives practical guidance to strengthen IA practice in SMH

Students’ identities are deeply connected to their mental health and well-being. This session introduces School Mental Health Ontario’s Identity-Affirming School Mental Health (IA-SMH) Frame and offers practical guidance to strengthen identity-affirming practice in school mental health.  We will explore approaches to support and care that are accessible, inclusive, culturally relevant, and responsive. This includes reflecting on how services are delivered, how relationships are built, and how pathways to support are shaped in partnership with communities and organizations with expertise in equity, reconciliation, culture, and mental wellness. Participants will leave with concrete strategies for school mental health practices where every student feels seen, valued, and supported.
