Updated Leading Mentally Healthy Schools resources now available
Ontario school administrators and system leaders have updated guidance for supporting and promoting student mental health.
School Mental Health Ontario has released a newly updated version of its guiding resource, the Leading Mentally Healthy Schools ebook.
Originally released in 2013, Leading Mentally Healthy Schools describes the core components of developing, operating, and sustaining mentally healthy schools in Ontario. It’s intended to support the needs of school administrators and system leaders in establishing the conditions to support and promote mental health and well-being in their school communities.
The 2024 version includes a suite of resources to accompany the ebook: a reorganized web section for school administrators (smho-smso.ca/school-administrators) and an updated online course, MH LIT – Mental Health in Action for School Administrators.
- creating conditions for effective school mental health practice
- everyday mental health promotion and literacy in classroom/school communities
- understanding mental health, mental illness, and addictive behaviour
- the connection between identity and mental health
- supporting staff wellness and knowledge
- how to notice signs of possible mental health problems
- where to seek professional mental health support
and much more.
Leading Mentally Healthy Schools is aligned with Policy/Program Memorandum 169 and the requirement for school boards to provide culturally responsive, evidence-informed student mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention services within the broader system of care.
