Purpose

To help build an intentional rapport and a relationship between teacher and student, and to let students see that they are seen and matter

  • When a teacher sees a student within 10 feet of them, they make eye contact and give them a smile.
  • When a student is within five feet, the teacher says “hi!”.

Research shows that teacher-student relationships have a significant impact on students’ academic engagement and achievement. As students get older and transition into secondary school, positive relationships with teachers become more important to increase self-confidence (Roorda, et. al., 2011). Further, positive relationships between students and teachers increases student engagement and motivates students to learn (Wentzel, 2009).
