School Mental Health Ontario is pleased to offer Level 2 Practice Based CBT Identity-Affirming (CBT-IA) Training: Deepening Your Practice
This 2-day practice based CBT- IA training is a more intensive, deeper dive into some of the critical components of CBT from an Identity-Affirming practice. It prepares School Mental Health Professionals (SMHP) for CBT practice, working with students at Tier 2 and early Tier 3 levels (mild to moderate mental health challenges) in the following ways:

We recommend that Managers/ Supervisors/ Mental Health Leaders consider their service delivery model, Mental Health and Addictions Strategy, PPM 169 and system needs when considering this training for their board.
Learning Agenda:
Review Cultural Humility and Identity-Affirming work and apply it to a specific student example that is shared by the SMHP in a break out room Reflection on our own practice examining our challenges, strengths and allies in this work Review and practice content that is more complex as it pertains to the TEA (Thoughts, Emotions and Actions) triangle, substance misuse, mood disorders and attendance. This includes: Measurement Based Care Thoughts: mapping values, strengths/supports, negative cognitive schemas, beliefs and assumptions Emotions: relaxation across cultures, five factor model, emotion coping and IA practice Actions: behaviour experiments, exposure Implementation of CBT-IA practice at your boardNote that practice time will follow each strategy.
We also focus on some of the complexities in the implementation of CBT-IA at your board.
Expectations:
It is expected that the participants come prepared for a full 2-day training session where they are required to:
engage in pre-training preparatory reading participate in break out rooms, review student stories/examples provided Come prepared with a specific student example that they would like to explore further using CBT and IA practice in break out rooms practice specific CBT strategies using worksheets in a safe spaceNote: If staff participated in SMH-ON CBT-IA pilot in May 2022, Nov 2023 or Feb 2024, there will be some slide repetition in Level 2. If the SMHP is VERY well versed in the concepts and regularly practices CBT, they are welcome to join but will experience their learning by sharing their own experiences and listening/reflecting on what others discuss. (SMHPs won’t necessarily learn new IA concepts or CBT strategies/concepts.)
Level 2 Pre-requisites:
The School Mental Health Professional (SMHP) who has knowledge of CBT foundational concepts and strategies from previous training, and uses it in their work with students on a mostly regular basis. This session provides CBT and IA concepts, strategies and worksheets that are different from those provided in the Level 1 CBT-IA: Foundations training. It is expected that those SMHP attending Level 2 CBT-IA training are already familiar with concepts such as: the TEA triangle negative automatic thoughts thinking traps relaxation practices cognitive coping behaviour activation problem solving The SMHP is well on their way in their own Cultural Humility journey, and is familiar with the impact of anti-black racism, colonialism on student mental health, social determinants of health, and graduation rates, as well as the concept of intersectionality. Likewise, the SMHP uses an anti-oppressive lens in their work on a regular basis. The SMHP has attended multiple SMH-ON learning and trainings on these topics, such as Dr. Gajara’s sessions, or has attended similar learning through their own board sessions. The Prevention and Early Intervention Learning and Training Participant Expectations and Certificate of Attendance will apply to this session. Please review the expectations and process for receiving your certificate in the FAQ section.
