Positive motivation and perseverance
Positive motivation and perseverance skills can help students approach challenges in life with an optimistic mindset and remain hopeful even when their circumstances are difficult. Explore and practise strategies that build on students’ strengths. Be careful not to present these skills as the solution to oppression and other systemic issues. Instead, talk about the role of motivation and perseverance in advocacy and collective action to remove barriers within the classroom, school and system.
Expressing gratitude
Viewing the world and relationships through a lens of gratitude can help students to notice and appreciate the positives in life, even when facing a challenge. Noticing and sharing gratitude can support healthy relationships and the development of resilience.
Perseverance
Students can learn to recognize the role of perseverance on the path to success through practices that reinforce its value and remind them that working through challenges can have many rewards.
Practising optimism
When students are optimistic in their interactions with others and in their world view, they are more likely to experience positive relationships and have the motivation to persevere and succeed.
Reframing
Reframing helps students see different explanations and perspectives for situations. Developing the skill can help students respond in more positive ways to difficult situations or circumstances over which they have less control.
