MI: Supporting the intersection of attendance and mental health


A Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach for supporting student mental health concerns and school attendance

School Mental Health Ontario (SMH-ON) and Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario (YWHO) are expanding the implementation of the PreVenture program for the 2026-27 school year and inviting school boards to express their interest.

The PreVenture program is an evidence-based prevention program with over 20 years of research, that uses brief personality targeted interventions to promote mental health and delay substance use among youth ages 12-18. The program aims to equip youth with tools to achieve their goals, and to develop cognitive behavioral skills to support them to cope with challenges, such as academic stress, peer pressure, interpersonal conflict, and identity development.

Audience

Mental health leadership teams: Directors/associate directors, Managers of clinical or mental health services, Managers of psychology services, Managers of social work services, Mental health leaders, Superintendents, Superintendents responsible for mental health, other.

Language

This session will be delivered in English. Materials, breakout rooms, etc. will be available in French and English.
