How Ontario’s Schools Support Children and Youth Mental Health and Social-Emotional Learning

Ontario’s schools are an excellent place for promoting positive mental health, for helping with social-emotional learning, for noticing when a student might be struggling with a mental health problem, and with supporting early intervention services and referrals to more intensive treatment when needed.

Educators play an important role in creating mentally healthy learning environments, supporting social-emotional learning, and helping students who might be struggling with a mental health problem while at school.

Most Ontario school districts also have mental health professionals on staff who provide prevention and early intervention support to students. They also work with mental health clinicians in the community to help ensure a strong circle of support when students need more care.
